Love them where they’re at…..
The stigma associated with those experiencing homelessness (notice we don’t say homeless- it’s what our friends are experiencing, not who they are) is heartbreaking. Assuming how someone may have had a bout of bad luck that ended them up on the streets will almost always be an incorrect answer. So many are victims of the eviction moratorium being lifted, being bussed in from other states (promise it’s true!) along with so many other sad situations. But as human beings- whether we believe in a higher power or not, we are called to love one another and treat others as equals- the way we want to be treated.
When scrolling through radio stations the other day- one phrase in passing channels jumped out at me. “Love them where they’re at”. Friends, this can be used in SO MANY situations. When it comes to our mission, it means that those that we serve are no different than those doing the serving. In the blink of an eye, situations change, especially in our current economy. So, I implore you to give a smile, a wave, or a nod of the head when you see someone down on their luck. They deserve the same respect as the CEO of the companies we see advertised as well as those that we work for.
A song that I happen to love gives a poignant message- “you’re only gonna get what you give away, so give love”.
